WATER HYACINTH

This purple flower of the water is in fact a weed that causes a good deal of environmental problems. The fast growth of the plant has caused much concern in many parts of the world by clogging up waterways impacting water flow, blocking sunlight from reaching native aquatic plants, and starving the water of oxygen, often killing fish. Water hyacinth remains a major problem where effective control programs are not in place. In an attempt to control the plant it has been put to use in number of ways including the production of homeware products. The fibrous root of the plant is dried by our expert craftsmen and woven into beautiful homewares.

WOVEN HOMEWARES

Bay Gallery Homewares offer superior quality woven homewares which are strong and malleable, allowing us to create curvaceous designs usually limited by alternate materials. The water hyacinth fibres are initially treated with a deep permeating seal. Next, they are woven by our expert craftsmen, before all the fibres are coated in an eco-friendly, non-toxic, water-based paint. The final coat is clear matt lacquer which enhances the rich lustre and creates a strong seal for the fibre.
